Akio Onda (Japanese b.1924) Woodblock Print
BiographyAkio Onda was born in 1924 in Tokyo. He had studied Western-style painting at the renowned Musashino College of Fine Arts in Tokyo. There he had learned woodblock printmaking from Shiko Munakata (1903-1975). Later he worked as his assistant.Akio Onda adopted the somewhat unusual technique "invented" by his teacher Shiko Munakata. With this technique the color is applied by hand from the backside of the prin...t. Therefore it is necessary to use this thin, translucent Japanese washi paper.
Tips for CollectorsAkio Onda prints were made in the technique of woodblocks. The prints are signed by the artist in pencil as Onda Akiyo and marked with a red artist seal. The prints are kept as open editions, i.e., they are not numbered.Akio Onda's art works are printed on a thin, translucent, Japanese kozo paper. This kind of paper is always more or less wavy. Thus they are difficult to photograph, and the prints often do not look very good in the internet. Especially the white area shows typical shadows and wrinkles due to the uneven paper.
The print has pencil signed lower left. Measurements:
