The drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid paper, depicts a design for a royal architectural sculpture, compose of the coat of arms of the King of Naples, Charles VII, flanked by two lions.On the backside : an inscription in Italian "Finimento sopra la Statua Equestre di Carlo III" (this is Charles VII of Naples, also King of Sicily as Charles V and finaly King of Spain as ...Charles III (Carlo III).In our opinion, this drawing was preparatory for the top part of an palais entrance in Naples, nearby the equestrian statue of King Charles VII.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Neapolitan School.
Period : ca. 1760-1770.
Size : 33, 6x31, 5cm.
Condition : Fairly good. Some scattered dirt throughout. Right side : slightly damaged, traces of folding. Right side below : one small secured tear. A part of the original sheet was re-joined. This part shows slightly damaged sided and is slightly smaller of shape than the upper part (right side : fragment of paper missing). Backside : paper fragments, used to re-join the two parts. Unframed.
