1836 stampless folded letter with red CITY OF WASHINGTON cds, red FREE handstamp and free frank signature "Jn. Rodgers" below manuscript "Navy Com'rs Office". Addressed to D. D. Brodhead, Navy Agent, at Boston.1 pg. letter contents, datelined Navy Commissioners Office, Oct. 26, 1836, signed "Jn. Rodgers"A scarce free franked cover and letter signed by Commodore JOHN RODGERS, (1772-1838), a Senior Naval Officer in the U.S. Navy who served under 6 Presidents for nearly 4 decade...s, from the late 1790's through the late 1830's. He served with distinction in the Quasi War with France, where he was made the Prize Master to take in the French Frigate "L'Insurgent"; Commanded the U.S.S. John Adams, the flagship, of the fleet which defeated the Barbary States of North Africa. During the War of 1812, he commanded the U.S.S. President, which fired the first shot of the war, and played a leading role in the recapture of Washington, D.C. after it was burned by the British. In 1815, he was appointed President of the Board of Navy Commissioners, serving until his retirement in May, 1837. He served briefly as Secretary of the Navy in 1823. In this letter, signed as President of the Board of Navy Commissioners, Rodgers authorizes Daniel D. Brodhead, the Navy Agent at Boston, to purchase 60 pieces of pine timber to be used for ship repairs. The letter includes: "Sir, You will upon the application of the Commandant of the Navy Yard, Boston, obtain by open purchase at a price not exceeding forty five cents per cubic foot, sixty pieces of pine timber belonging to Messrs. Rand & Fiske, on account of Repairs. I am very respectfully Yr. Obed. Svt.Jn. Rodgers"The cover has a thin stain at the right edge. The letter has some toning at right edge and at folds, and a small nick at the right edge.Fine.
