ITEM: Original WWII photo of men of the SIXTH FERRYING GROUP, Assam, INDIA, CBI (1943-1945). The two men in the back are lieutenants/pilots. Lt. Callahan on the right is wearing a flight jakcet with unit patch. Has descriptive note written on the back.Photo was taken by Staff Sergeant James "Jimmy" Roark of Prestonsburg, Kentucky. H...e graduated from Prestonsburg High School in 1938. He was a star basketball, football, and baseball player in high school. In 1941 he received a contract to play for the St. Louis Cardinals, but he had already signed up with the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Roark coached, managed, and played for the Sixth Ferrying Group baseball team at Long Beach, California untel he went overseas to the China Burma India (CBI) Theater in 1943. Based at Assam, India, his Ferrying Group "flew the Hump" taking supplies over the Himalayas to air bases in China. In addition to his AAF duties, Roark led various AAF baseball and basketball teams in the Air Tranport Command.
