Cambodia 13th C. Rare Multi-armed Temple Relic. Siem Reap Province. Museum Quality!
Overview: A superb sandstone example of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity from Khmer mythology, son of Shiva and Parvati, known as the 'Remover of Obstacles', and god of success and fortune. He is portrayed as an idol with the body of a man and the head of an elephant, having only one tusk. Ganesha's head is symbolic of the wisdom of the elephant and represents man's eternal striving towards intergration with nature.XXX In Cambodia, from the Pre-Angkor period until well beyond the Khmer Angkorian era, Ganesha is worshipped and revered by followers of Vishnu, and was even considered a favorite during the reign of the Buddhist King Jayavaraman VII, he was intended to be worshiped in a religious environment with strong tantric learings, often housed in independent temples, featuring depictions of Ganesha in wall relief carvings. Image Details: The image is exquisitely modeled in traditional Angkorian style, chiseled from a solid block of dense sandstone, unaltered and unrepaired, with intricate detailing of the features, depicting a multi-armed divinity figure, meditating in a seated position, while holding attributes in each of his four hands. The upper right hand holds what would have been the trident, while the upper left hand holds the remains of a conch shell, the lower right hand holds his own broken tusk, and the lower left hand rest against his knee holding a delicacy 'Modaka', a bowl of sweets which he samples with his trunk from time to time. Ganesha's sacred thread, the serpent Cobra 'Vasuki', is coiled about his torso.xxxxxx Ganesha is shown unclothed above the waist, exposing his large pot belly practically falling over his garment, a short vertical striated Sampot, folded over a wide belt secured around his waist, and tied in the back in a butterfly notch. His well proportioned head is beautifully rendered with a tilt, incised almond shaped eyes, broken tusks, and trunk carved in the round, whorles to the left, and large ears resting on his broad shoulders. He is portrayed in early Bayon style with a conical shaped headdress enclosed by an inter-connected 'Diadem' crown tied at the back.xxxxxx The stone carving is in excellent condition, unaltered in any way, with detailing still clearly visible, and with no evidence of re-carved features. The naturally aged patina penetrates the surface of stone in wonderful variations of dark grey hues and colours, with clear evidence of selective erosion developing over the surface, from extensive exposure to the natural elements, and minerals contained within the surrounding area in which it was maintained.Origin:xxxxxxxxx Siem Reap Province, Cambodia.Period:xxxxxxxx Angkor Wat, Bayon style. 13th century.Composition:xx Solid Block of Sandstone, naturally aged patina w/oxidation .Dimensions:xxx Height: 16.0 inches (40.64cm).Observation:xxx Excellent Condition, with the exception of two severed attributes, and minor surface abrasions.
