It was used in the Arizona territory and we believe it had once hung in the San Xavier mission in Tucson, one of the oldest buildings in the American southwest. The theory behind why they used a portrait of Mary Magdalene is subject to debate, but we believe they had less resistance from the Nat...ive Americans when they introduced the concept of Mary Magdalene, as opposed to using the image of Mary Mother of Christ, as they ran into difficulties with the Native Americans when they had to believe in a virgin birth. In any case, a fantastic early Arizona painting, rare beyond anything. Gold leaf paint applied in areas to highlight divinity, perhaps angelic, ...stretchers are typical Spanish southwestern, early canvas. We are Pioneer Heroes Museum, of Casa Grande, Arizona.
