1947 Photo & Clipping book of Asst Secty of War Petersen’s visit to the Canal Zone This is a unique remembrance book complied by the US military in the Canal Zone for US Assistant Secretary of War Howard C. Petersen for his April 1947 inspection trip to the CZ. to lay the cornerstone for a FDR monument and for talks with the Panamanian government regarding the future of US military bases in Panama (outside the Zone). They include US Army Signal Corps photos of his arrival aboard the... SS Cristobal on 14 April 1947 and of a reception in his honor, mainly of one at Quarry Heights that evening, with photos of Lt Gen and Mrs Willis Crittenberger, him being the Commander of the Caribbean Defense Command and the Panama Canal Department, US Army, and CZ Acting Governor Francis Newcomer, as well as newspaper articles from the Panama Star & Herald, Panama American and The Nation. The cover had a 2 ¾” patch of the Caribbean Defense Command (later the US Army Southern Command); it has come off, but it is included. Binder is 8 ½ x 11 inches and has heavy cardboard covers with thin paper sheets for the photos and articles. Great condition and very historic. Howard C. Petersen was the last Assistant Secretary of War, as it was renamed the Department of Defense in 1948 after he stepped down. While he remained a Director of the Panama Canal Company for many years, he was a banker and headed Fidelity Bank of Philadelphia in later years. Excellent condition.
