Original Description:
Civil War Document 1862 143 Regiment Pennsylvania Lingelter, Farnham Gettysburg This is an antique original Civil War document which is a single page from an account ledger book that measures 15 1/4" x 10 3/8" with information on both sides . The page is an account of purchases made by two different soldiers during their enlistment in Union Army with the 143 Regiment, Co. B of the Pennslyvania Volunteers. The soldiers are Private Kenderton L. Farnham of Benton ...PA and Eliphalet Garniner. The document is recorded/ signed by Sergeant D.J.M Lingelter (Jacob). Lingelter is eventually promoted to a Captain later in the War. This Regiment served at Gettysburg during the dates listed on this document. Private Kenderton's name is on the Monument at Gettysburg. The record on the front of this document is for Farnham. The back side of the page is record for Gardiner (deserter). Muster-in dates are listed on this document for both men. Farnham's document  spans 1862-1864. It ends with, " Died in Div Hospital Jan 17 1864" . During the years of this document the 143 Regiment was in the following engagements: Belle Plan VA, Chancellorsville Campaign, Operation of Pollacks Mill Creek, Battle of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg Campaign, Battle of Gettysburg, Pursuit of Lee, Duty at Bealeton Station, Bristoe Campaign, Haymarket, Advance to Line of the Rappahannock, Warrenton and  Guard at Manassas Junction. The Regiment went on to other engagements after Jan 1984 when this document ends. It is likely that the soldiers listed on this document were at these engagements. I did some research to learn Farnham died of Typhoid. Gardiner and 12 others in Co. B deserted on the same day in January...two days before Farnham's death. (I suspect an exit from a possible disease ridden winter camp). It is a sad thing to see the purchases of Farnham, just 2 months before his death included a wool blanket and canteen...probably items on his death bed. Farnham was about 23 years old (I found record of him as 18yrs on 1860 Census Record). His parents were Stephen and Ann. I also read that the 143 Regiment was part of the famous "Bucktails", a unit recognized for skill as soldiers. They wore deer bucktails on their hats.   This is a very interesting document with a story to tell.  My photos are of the actual item you are getting. See my store for other interesting items.
