DISSTOND-8 RIP SAW, 26" PLATE WITH 5 1/2 POINT TOOTH LINE, PRE-1928 VINTAGEThis is a fineworking saw that dates to sometime before 1928. The screws are brass and look to be all original. Thehandle is in very nice shape for its age, though if does have a few blemishes. There are no repairs. The cover top is chipped out slightly. The handle has been treated with BLO and given a fresh coat of shellac. The plate is a little stained but still veryshi...ny with a good visible etch. It isflat, straight and stiff with plenty of plate height left. The tooth line is crowned and has thestandard Disston progressive pitch at the toe. Meaning the tooth pitch is progressively stepped one point higher to 61/2 points near the toe. This old saw stilllooks great and is also very functional. As far as rip saws go, there are none better. I have cleaned, tuned and hand sharpened itwith standard rip geometry. The teeth are very sharp and consistent. The plate height is 2 1/2" at the toe and 7"at the handle. The plate is taper groundwith a thickness of .036” at the tooth line tapered to .026" on top nearthe toe. Its tooth line is slightly crownedand it has been hand sharpened with 7 degrees of rake, 0 degrees of fleam and 0degrees of slope. It cuts both fast andclean and will stay sharp for a long time if used and cared for properly.
I test cut dry oak and fir after the sharpening. The saw cuts very clean, straight andfast. This saw will cut most any woodand is especially well suited for soft to medium hard woods.
This is an exceptionally nice vintage saw and I believe itsnew owner will enjoy putting it back to work. There arenot a lot of good old Disstons left out there and they are getting fewer allthe time. It is my hope that this onefinds its way to a traditional craftsman and gets to fulfill its destiny. Iam starting the price low so you can be the judge of this saw's value.
