A very finely painted Arita dish of moulded hexagonal formwith notched corners and fuchibeni (iron brown glazed rim) rim decorated in under-glaze blue with a patterncombining a number of elements ultimately derived from blue and white Chineseporcelain made for export to Japan in the 17th century. The centre of the dish is decorated with a Pine and Deer, a classic Chinese subject and homophone for "prosperity" surrounded by border of auspicious Trigrams. The cavetto ...divided into six panels each containing an auspicious plant , peach, prunus and peonies symbols of wealth and longevity. The reverse painted with "Kraak" style reserves repeating motifs from the front of the dish with a square seal containing archaic characters Fuku, good luck. This wouldhave been a relatively expensive piece of porcelain in its day reflecting thevery high standard of painting and the superior quality of the porcelain.Similar sherds have been excavated from the Higuchi kiln in the Nangawaravalley, possibly from the Kakiemon workshop. The dish dates to the late 18thCentury.The dish measures 20.6cm in diameter and stands 3.3cm highto the rim. The foot-ring measures 12.5cm and the dish weighs 378 grams. Thedish is in very good condition no cracks, chips or restoration some minor kiln flaws.
