Original Description:

We are both the oldest surviving members of our families. As life-long collectors, and inheritors from those who have Gone Before, we must move on some of our Stuff before that (hopefully far-off) day when it becomes our children’s responsibility. Happy to combine for cheaper postage but PLEASE WAIT for combined invoice from me or ask me for one; postage discounts can only be given on combined purchases paid for on a single invoice. International Buyers please note: Unless the po...stage method quoted on this listing is shown as Express Post / Courier International or Registered Post International, then your item is being sent at Large Letter rate which has NO TRACKING. If you require a more expensive method of posting which comes with tracking, please contact me before you pay. If you accept this cheaper method of posting, PLEASE BE PATIENT; 20-25 days is not uncommon for letter rate air mail delivery from Australia. AUSTRALIAN BUYERS: if your postage method is shown as Standard Delivery, it is being sent as a Large Letter which has NO TRACKING. If you would prefer to pay extra to add tracking please contact me BEFORE you pay. These cards seem to have come from an album belonging to the family of Duncan Elphinston McBryde Leary, who was born 10 November 1918 to Thomas Garnet Stirling Leary and his wife Alice nee McBryde. Thomas Garnet Stirling Leary had been born in Northern Ireland at Castlederg in 1879 and trained as a Doctor at Edinburgh University. He married Alice in Melbourne in 1912 and then served briefly with the AIF at Gallipoli before returning to Melbourne due to poor health. Alice was the daughter of prominent Victorian MLC Duncan McBryde – an account of her family can be found here
http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/mcbryde-duncan-elphinstone-7296
Duncan had 3 sisters – Helen Mary (born 1913 married Gavin Finlay); Mary Patricia (Pat) (born 1914 married John Talbot Finlay) and Margaret McBryde (Peg) (born 1917 married Peter Dunkley Wallace). Their parents travelled extensively both in Australia and overseas in the 1920s and 1930s and most of these cards were sent to / collected for Duncan at that time. At times Duncan seemed to live at the family home at Kamesburgh, Fernhill Rd Sandringham under the care of a “Nurse”, at others he was a boarder at Geelong Grammar.
Many of the early Australian scenic postcards are addressed to Mary Rosa (Rose) Burdekin. Initially living at Purley in Surrey England, she was the daughter of John Edwin Burdekin (born York 1861), who had arrived in Melbourne probably to work with / for his uncle Samuel Burdekin who had an office in Elizabeth St Melbourne in 1908. Rose was in Melbourne by December 1909; her father remarried Isabella Angus in Melbourne in 1911 and Rose married Thomas Duckworth in 1921. The relationship to the Leary family is not known, but there is also an association with the Boardman family, whose postcard collection I have previously listed.

Mostly these are postally used cards, please let the photos be your guide to condition. Some are damaged but may be historically interesting still. Happy to combine, the price of postage for an individual card is shown on the listing. Any number of these domestic postcard lots can be sent for $5 (includes Registered Post), any number of these International Post card lots can be sent for $25 which includes tracking. International buyers PLEASE NOTE: $3.30 Standard Airmail Letter post does NOT include tracking. Airmail letters can take up to 21 business days to arrive, so if your card is coming via this method, please be patient. If you want to combine items you must wait for a combined invoice from me.

My Items

The items I sell are vintage; they are second hand, old, sometimes very old. I try to describe and photograph my itemshonestly and to the best of my ability; however if pristine condition is very important to you, I feel you should be buying from a regular shop, where you can inspect the items personally. Please note that all my items are sold "as is", with no warranty implied, and that the photos form part of the description, which should be read carefully. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM PLEASE CONTACT ME FIRST.

Shipping and Payment Terms; Combining Items

If you win more than one item in a listing please wait for a combined invoice from me to save you on postage and insurance costs. I always wait until the last item in an auction listing finishes before sending invoices in case buyers win more than one item. If you win an item and are planning to bid on an item in a later-finishing auction, please email me to let me know, and I will wait until that auction has finished to send you a combined invoice.

I would normally expect payment within 5 days; if for some reason this is not possible, please contact me to explain.

Many of my items are very light and could be combined without much (or any) increase in postage costs. Once the value of a parcel exceeds $100 postal insurance must be paid. Within Australia this costs $4.45; Registered Post International varies - please ask for a quote.

International buyers please note: Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or postage charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's Customs Office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (postage) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional postage charges.

Problem with a Transaction?

PLEASE contact me first. I am a reasonable human being; if there is a problem I am sure we can work something out that will satisfy us both. Involving eBay should be a last resort – something I hope will not be necessary. Contact Seller is the first option under More Actions on your Purchase History page, Contact Seller is top right of every listing, or simply Reply to the email I sent when I posted your item.

Feedback – Late Shipment Rate

eBay’s newest measure to defect Sellers is the Late Shipment Rate. As we all know, Sellers do not PERSONALLY deliver packages. Once I take an item to the Post Office, delivery time is up to Australia Post or International Carriers. The estimated time of arrival that eBay gives is often grossly inadequate, especially to areas far from me, or overseas. If you choose to leave Feedback, eBay may ask you whether your item arrived within the estimated delivery time. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION; it is not compulsory, just as Feedback is not compulsory. If you are happy with the time of arrival, or know it arrived within the given dates, you can answer Yes if you want to. If you can’t remember, or realise that delivery times are beyond my control, I would encourage you not to answer the question. It has always been my policy to leave Positive Feedback when an item has been paid for and I have posted the parcel. I will always email you to let you know when that occurs, so you may know when to expect the parcel; if the parcel has tracking, I will let you know the number, and also upload it to eBay so that you can track its progress there.

Leaving Feedback is not compulsory; if you want to leave me Positive Feedback, then that is very nice and I appreciate it. If you have some problem with our transaction, and you feel like leaving me Neutral or Negative Feedback, please contact me BEFORE leaving Feedback so that we can work something out that will leave us both feeling happier. I always try to describe my items fully and honestly, and work hard to try and ensure that my buyers are satisfied. However I am only human; SHOULD a problem arise please contact me FIRST. Sorry about the length of this message; I assume that you may want to remain an eBay buyer, and hope that if you buy from me your experience will be a happy one. It is just that with the way things are changing, there may no longer be small sellers of vintage items (like me) on eBay to buy from.
