This attractive magician's token (coin or medal), dated by references to approximately 1900, was issued by the Martinka Magic Shop in New York City, which was established in 1877 (billed as the oldest magic shop in the U. S.) and once was owned by Harry Houdini. The two sides have identical designs, with a bearded magician in the center, holding his magic wand in one hand and his top hat in the other, each over a cascade of objects that, of course, were appearing magically! ... The words MUNDUS VULT DECIPI: DECIPIATUR (tr: The World Wants to Be Deceived: Let It Be Deceived.) are along the rim. There is no mark for manufacturer or metal content, but the composition is a silver-toned non-magnetic metal. The diameter is approximately 31 mm (nearly 1-1/4"), and there is vertical reeding (milling) on the edge. This item is in very fine condition, with light wear, signs of handling, toning, and some soiling, and it is bright, with a good toned silver color. The illustrations in this listing are photos of the actual item being offered for sale and serve as part of the description. NOTE: This token is more detailed, has a better silver color, is lighter in color, and is much brighter than is evident in the photos.Payment must be received within ten days of close of auction.
