Offered is this original red leather 5 x 3 inch (folded closed) 1864 personal pocket diary of Sergeant Charles J. Gardner of Attica, NY., Company C, 1st N.Y. Dragoons. This is his first hand account of daily experiences as a Civil War Cavalry Soldier in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. Sgt. Gardner was moving around constantly, and has briefly described activities, as they happened at Cedar Mountain, Sperryville, Culpeper, Bald Mountain, Stevensburg, Chancellorsville, Genera...l Sheridan's Raid, Fredericksburg, the capture of Brigade General Stewart, Belle Plains, Bottoms Bridge, Old Church, Robert Lee Plantation, Guinea Station, West Point, Kings and Queens Courthouse, Harrison's Landing, Petersburg & Cross Fork R.R., and Petersburg & Weldon R.R. On part of this book, from July 19th until August 10th, there is no writing and no explanation why. On August 11th Sgt. Gardner was wounded and taken by ambulance to a church at Winchester, VA. with other wounded men. He had continued taking notes daily, waiting for triage, being transferred to Sandy Hook, then to Baltimore's Camden Hospital where they amputated his leg on September 2nd. Diary ends on October 29th, signed "Went home on furlough". Condition : Leather cover shows moderate edge rub with tears on back edges. The closure fastening strap is missing. Inside pages show yellowing and most gilt has worn from their edges. Four of the Memoranda and Cash Account pages in the back of the book have been torn out (see last photo). All of the dated pages are intact. The string binding is coming apart and some of the pages are loose. The ink on some of the pages has faded but with the help of a magnifying glass is mostly legible.
