My research leads me to believe that this is a Bog Oak Mourning brooch and the pin would suggest a date of somewhere between 1870 and 1910. Beautifully carved with a Rose, some Shamrocks a Thistle and what looks like the leaves of a Leek. This would seem to represent the four nations of the United Kingdom. The design and pin would suggest that this may have been carved at the time of Queen Victorias death, when the whole of the country would have been in mourning.
The brooch is substantial in size measuring approximately 50mm across and is in remarkably good condition for its age.
