Rare 1947 ALS of Pulp Artist Raymond Thayer orig. of "The Mask"NOTE : [ Two items in this Sale ][ 1 ] Original 1947 Autograph Letter Signed by Pulp Artist Raymond Thayer on his Personal Letterhead. Possible originator of "The Mask" in 1940 for Exciting Comics.[ 2 ] Printed Negro Cartoon clipped from an unknown magazine with artwork by Raymond Thayer.[ Description of #1 ] Original Raymond Thayer ALS handwritten on his personal stationary with a printed letterhe...ad that says ; "RAYMOND THAYER 202 EAST 46th STREET, NEW YORK CITY. MURRAY HILL 2-8468." When held to the light the paper has a elegant watermark that says ; "ENGLISH BOND RAG CONTENT A Master Line PAPER." Measures 11.00 x 8.50 inches.  [ Transcript of Handwritten Letter.]  "Dear Mr. Milkman : I'm afraid I can only send you empty bottles but here's to best wishes and eternal life. Yours, Raymond Thayer. July 19th, 1947." [ CONDITION ] On the reverse are four areas with remnant's of other paper where it was likely attached to an album page. Condition is excellent, bright and clean with no tears or stains on the front side with the letterhead and hand-written letter.
 [ Description of #2 ] Printed Raymond Thayer cartoon clipped from a unknown magazine. Likely circa 1920's to late 1930's considering the racial theme.
 [ Description of the image. ] Black and white cartoon with a young man siting on a porch playing a banjo. On the porch an older woman is washing clothes with a wash board, to the right an attractive well dressed young woman is seated holding a purse as she watches the young man play the banjo. On the porch also is a young girl smiling and looking askance at the older woman as she speaks. [ Text ] "Yas'm, He Sure Shows Talent. I Hopes to send him up to Harlem for a Year."  NOTE : This cartoon is 'Signed in-the-plate' "Raymond Thayer" with a almost identical font as his No. #1 printed letterhead. Also at the lower right corner is printed; "DRAWN BY RAYMOND THAYER." [ CONDITION ] Bright and clean and neatly trimmed with no tears or stains. Lightly glued in 4 small spots to apparently acid free paper as there is no yellowing. [ About the Artist.] We are not certain but the consigner said that the artist painted covers for Judge, Life, and Collier's Magazine. His cover painting and interior story illustrations also appeared in pulp magazines, such as Argosy, Gay Book, True Gang Life, Five Novels, and Blue Book. In 1940 he created the "The Mask" for Exciting Comics, which was produced by Better Comics, a Thrilling Group publication. [ Needs research.] [ From the internet.] " Artist Raymond Thayer only dabbled in comics but was known as one of the great pulp artists of his day. This version of The Mask was his creation and in a way foreshadowed Marvel's Daredevil with a blind man being secretly a superhero.
