M. A. Newmark stemmed from the Harris Newmark enterprises. It operated starting 1885 at 41-51 North Los Angeles Street. Of Jewish Prussian origin, the Newmark clan were instrumental in the early development of Los Angeles. They were a principal grocery outlet from the 1850s for about a century.
One of the condiment bottles is marked McL, which stands for William McLaughing.
William McLaughlin&...nbsp;moved to Los Angeles in 1915 after working for the Illinois Glass Co. He quickly became a significant figure in the Los Angeles bottle making scene, going thru rises and falls of his enterprises. He was extremely creative and resourceful, having received numerous patents for glass blowing methods.
Bottle 1:Clear glass, decagon shape, embossed 'M. A. NEWMARK & CO.', fine condition, approx. 12" high x Ø 2 5/8", free of chips or cracks, scratches, few bubbles, the bottom is marked McL and 3, noteworthy is the underlined c in the mark, weight is 1 lb 4 oz.
Bottle 2:Clear glass, decagon shape, embossed 'BOTTLED BY M. A. NEWMARK & CO', very fine condition, tooled lip with a screw top, approx. 11 3/4" high x Ø 2 5/8", uncleaned, free of chips or cracks, scratch-free - sparse and tiny bubbles - 7 - 3 embossed on reverse near base, 1 lb 1 oz, probably a later model than bottle 1, not by McLaughlin.
