Perfect for collectors, a colorful vintage patent medicine bottle, from Dr. Hand's! A similar snake-oil manufacturer to Dr. Kilmer's, Clark Stanley's, and other collectibles.
The condition has some sediment and what appears to be hairline fractures at the base, but overall it is intact and with a great label. The history of Dr. Hand's is below:
“Dr. Hand’s Remedies for Children, ” subtitled “The Mother’s Advisor & Children’s Friend” was pub...lished in 1885 by The Hand Medicine Company, Philadelphia. The little, 32 page pamphlet contained a catalog of late 19th century patent medicines for children along with testimonials from parents, druggists and doctors.
"His patent medicines includes a teething lotion, worm elixir, general tonic, a colic cure, cough and croup medicine and a diarrhea mixture. The remedies were hailed as standard preparation that were being sold by “all druggists.”
"Modern day critics have questioned Dr. Hand’s use of alcohol in children’s medicine.
"Jack Sullivan, who has written a blog, “Bottles, booze and back stories” posted an article in 2014, examining Dr. Hand’s products and their purported safety for children.
"The backs of the bottles frequently carried a label entitled “Whiskey and Babies” which stated that whiskey and sugar were commonly administered to young infants, and gave them “an appetite for drink.” The label stated, “Fully one hundred barrels of whiskey are fed to babies under one year of age in the United States every day, ” as a potion to make the baby sleep. ”... A harmless remedy is wanted for cross babies, crying babies, fretful babies, and colicky babes. We have it in Dr. Hand’s Colic Cure.”
"Sullivan wrote that in 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed, which required the listing of ingredients, including alcoholic content. ”...It was revealed for the first time that Dr. Hand’s Teething Lotion was 12% alcohol (24 proof). While not as strong as whiskey, the concoction was stronger than most wines.”
