CARR & CO, QUEEN MARY STEAMSHIP LIFEBOAT AND RAFT RATION BISCUIT TIN This tin came from the RMS Queen Mary a Cunard Ocean Liner owned by the Cunard Steam-Ship Company formerly the British and American Royal Steamship Packet Company. The biscuits were packed by Carr & Co Ltd, Carlisle, for the Queen Mary sailing from Southampton. Carr & Co were the largest biscuit manufacturers in Britain by 1939 and its factory was the largest in the world producing 14, 500 tons per year.Th...e tin contains a certificate of authenticity which states " Original in-service equipment used aboard RMS "Queen Mary" see photograph.The sister ship of the RMS Queen Mary was the RMS Titanic operated by White Line Star designed to compete with the famous Cunard Liners like the Luisitania.She sailed on her maiden voyage on 27th May 1936 constructed by the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank and known for a short period as the worlds largest Ocean Liner. In the second world war RMS Queen Mary left New York for Sidney Australia where she was converted into a troopship carrying Australian and New Zealand soldiers to the United Kingdom. Painted grey and because of her speed she became known as the Grey Ghost.During the war the RMS Queen Mary carried British Prime Minister Winston Churchill across the Atlantic for meetings with allied forces.The RMS Queen Mary retired from service in 1967 and left Southampton for the last time and sailed to Long Beach California where she remained permanently moored.This biscuit tin certainly has history but it is difficult to determine its age I would estimate it is from 1936 through to 1949 when the ship was in service for Cunard White Star LineDimensions 7.75" x 4" x 2.5"Weight 720g
