AN ORIGINAL 1842 US NAVY CUTLASS SWORD, NO SCABBARD,   MARKED with MANUFACTURER as N.P. AMES of CABOTVILLE, MASS. (Cutlass marked "18" on bottom of guard)This Navy cutlass was intended for general ship defense, and this sword is relatively short (26.5" long, with blade 21"). Has wide brass guard for extra sailor hand protection, grip is brass and adorned with fish design. Blade is straight with edge top and bottom. Sword weighs 2lbs, 9 ounces.
