Very Nice, Scarce Pair ofEarly Framed CLASSIC CURRIER & IVES OUTDOOR SCENE PRINTS, Horse Racing& Blacksmith Related DESCRIPTION: Scans show them both.....I apologize for thelight reflection in the glass in several of the pictures which reduces thebrightness of some of the colors. They are in actuality quite bright and detailed. This lot CONSISTS OF A PAIR (2) of largehorse related colored/tinted prints by the famous CURRIER & IVES, from the1870’s. The first is ...a veryscarce print showing a large horse race between “PEYTONA and FASHION”, asindicated. Further states that it was their great match for $20, 000 over theUnion Course on May 13, 1845“. A GREAT ACTION SCENE showing the horses andLITERALLY HUNDREDS OF SPECTATORS, all cheering for their favorite, watchingfrom both the inside and the outside of the track. At the bottom is printed thedescription of each of the horses, INCLUDING ALL RIDER INFORMATION, winning time, and the fact that the race was won by Peytona, etc. Also is printed with “Lith. AndPub. by N. Currier, 152 Nassau St.” This was published around the time of therace, 1845-1850, judging by the appearance, the address, and the fact that Iveshad not yet teamed up with Currier. A very early print and VERY INTERESTING& UNUSUAL CONTENT!!!The second one is also avery scarce action print showing a BLACKSMITH AT HIS FORGE, with several largehorses being shod and groomed by a variety of groomers. All in period dress, AND A GREAT PERIOD HORSE/RACING SCENE. The horses are identified below asMountain Boy, Grey Eagle, and Lady Thorn. Also below is the print title ”TROTTINGCRACKS AT THE FORGE”. Also printed belowis “Published by Currier & Ives, 152 Nassau St.”. THESE ARE BOTHPARTICULARLY SCARCE AND INTERESTING PRINTS AS THEIR OUTDOOR SCENES ALWAYS ARE. Much, much scarcer than their simple portraits. Both are framed inmatching vintage thin black frames, probably dating from the 1930’s. Overallframed size is approximately 16 3/4" x 12 ¾”. Print itself (open area)measures 15 1/2" x 12 1/2".Coloring in both isbeautiful, and of course GREAT DETAIL in each. Classic Currier & Ivesoutdoor scenes. Hard to tell if these are original 19th century prints, but if reproductions they are very early ones and of excellent quality. Really look good and in very goodcondition.
