THIS IS A VERY NICE EARLY FIREPLACE COAL and WOOD BOX .THERE IS A BOTTOM GRATE TO DUMP THE ASHES FROM THE BOX . (I have two Fire grates listed on my Ebay Shop-The other listing is a little cheaper because the bottom is bent , but this grate is in good condition- This grate is rusty and needs good wire brushing but very handsome.))( #C02)M...EASUREMENTS - 40 5/8 x 20 ¼ h x 13 As coal replaced wood, the types of antiquefire grates changed. The earliest fire grates meant to be used with coal weresimple metal baskets with openings in the floor to allow air to circulate.Generally known as dog grates, they are among the most popular antique firegrates today. The front legs (or ‘dogs’) became decorative accents withfanciful castings and carvings. The center basket supported the logs – andeventually was replaced by floors with smaller openings so that they could beused with mixed fuel – coal and/or wood.Condition: *See Photos - Good Condition -
