This auction is for a stunning example of a crinoid fossil of the species Pentacrinites fossilis from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK.The fossil measures 46 mm (1.83 inches) across. The fossil consists of a stem section with incredibly well preserved attachment cirri. It is preserved in limestone with a thin layer of pyrite that gives it a nice golden shine. The fossil was found in two pieces and has been repaired back together, which is normal practi...ce with these fossils. These crinoids are very sought after and not easy to find these days.Crinoids (also known as "sea lilies") are not plants, but animals that are closely related to star fish and sea urchins. They are still found alive today in oceans around the world.Around 195 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
