Japanese folk character Tanuki (badger, raccoon) carved from wood, handmade by unknown Japanese artist, has been purchased in Japan in 1995. The figurine depicts Tanuki holding sake flask in his right hand/paw and plaque with hieroglyph "sake" in left paw. Tanuki has eyes made of glass, one eye is half-damaged, but this imperfection gives Tanuki's face some sort of very specific expression as if after drinking sake.
The surface of the figurine, carved from some solid wood pieces, as...sembled together in one whole sculpture, has absolutely beautiful pattern of tree rings. The figurine design has been made with properly chosen "construction" for body parts, - very successful result.
There are mark on the sake flask and circle on the plaque made of white paint.Size is 5 3/4 inches tall, maximal dimension of the bottom is 3 inches.
The figurine has been used as decorative element of interior. There are some damages - shown on pictures: - one eye is half-missing- the crack on the lower part between paw and tail- tiny cracks on the body- small cavity on the back.Some wear is all over the figurine. All these imperfections do not decrease the aesthetical perception and general image of the figurine, - as proof of its age.No other damages, no smells, no stains except natural wood colors.
