...This is an unidentified limb from the always surprising McDermitt diggings (Incertae sedis is the Latin name used for unidentified petrified wood specimens). While we often concentrate on identified specimens or pieces that are polished, there are times when a piece of petrified wood has such fantastic wood-like character that we simply don't think it could be improved upon by polishing or being able to attach a name to it. This limb falls right into that category. It is one of those specimens that even a novice can tell at an instant that it is petrified wood. Some the best displays we see are those that incorporate all natural specimens along with polished limbs and polished slabs. Nothing would be gained by cutting off an end to polish it. The limb measures approximately 1" x .5" in cross section and approximately 4" in length. We generally identify the diggings as McDermitt, Nevada, which is both the closest inhabited place as well as the access point to the dirt roads leading to the diggings. However, the extensive diggings are just across the border in Oregon (Malheur County), but it takes a GPS to find that out. There are no signs on the dirt roads announcing "Entering Oregon". We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and, when known, family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we do not know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.Buyer to pay $5 for economy shipping to addresses in the United States.
