ADS. 1pg. March 22, 1800. York County, Pennsylvania. An early Pennsylvania document signed "Charles W Hartley" as Prothonotary (a type of chief clerk) of York County. It concerns a "registry of negroes", likely York County's Register of Free Negros that was maintained in the late-18th and early-19th centuries. "I Charles W Hartley Prothonotary of York County certify that I have searched the Registry of Negroes and cannot find that John Livingston has recorded any by the name of Ma...rgaret. In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the seal of said county this twenty second day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred. Charles W Hartley".
