This is a beautiful and rare antique Victorian Aboriginal Maireener shell necklace dating from the 19th century.
The necklace is in a blue / green colour with lovely rainbow iridescence.I find that photographs never do these shells justice and they are darker and have more blue than shows.
These Maireener shells were strung by the elders for adorning, as gifts or tokens and for trading.It is a great skill to string these delicate shells and they are highly prized, not often seen ...outside of museums and private collections.
The necklace is in very good antique condition with just a couple of tips of shells missing commensurate with age.It measures 22 inches long and has 114 shells of roughly 1/4" long, fastening with a brass screw clasp.
