This is one of the smaller but better examples of petrified wood from this forest we've offered recently. It represents the latest round from the most amazing logs I've ever seen from Argentina. This piece features a very hard agate center and is the heel end cut from the log which shows the natural weathering of the wood before it was petrified! It's framed by soft earth, orange and cream colors that preserved the rest of th...e log and even the actual bark (which is rare in any petrified wood). We were able to coax a nice shine from the entire surface but especially the agate zone. The cell structure of this ancient conifer fossil is ready visible through almost the entire polished face. Taken together these features really make this a wonderful show off piece. No fractures of significance - one of the best quality specimens you'll see from this forest. Don't miss a chance for a choice specimen from this location - it's no longer exportable from Argentina and when the few pieces circulating among collectors are gone, there won't be any more. This is one of the most beautiful, complete petrified wood rounds from one of the most exotic new locations I've seen in quite a while. This very fine grade of petrified wood came from the southern tip of South America in Argentina! It is what remains of an ancient hardwood forest that thrived many millions of years ago. This round comes from the newest of the logs we've gotten from that part of the world. It's a conifer of some type, probably araucaria. If you follow our auctions, you know what a horrible time I have getting photos with lots of light colors to turn out - this round is in that category. It is much more striking in real life than my camera can capture. The agate preservation in the center is what it's all about though - these picture wood pieces are the finest that this famed petrified forest produces and are by far the most desirable for a collection. This top quality round is not only 100% there, rind and all, but it has some of the most stunning growth ring detail you'll ever see in petrified wood. If the timeless mystery of this piece isn't enough for you, then I'm certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be. The colors are warm and rich and the entire piece is completely preserved in a very high grade of agate. The high agate content allows this stone to be polished to a liquid perfect, lustrous finish that only the best grades of fossil wood can achieve. This round is on the large end for most of the Argentina specimens I've seen. There must be big trees down there, but the only ones I've seen have mostly been smaller than this. All in all, this is one of the best rounds from one of the most interesting locations you could hope to find. This round is is a perfect slice taken from the center of a very solid log. It's nearly flawless with only one meandering fracture line (completely stabilized) working across the face. It's really a nice piece, but what else would you expect from a business named "Sticks-in-Stones"?!
