1880's Gurley Oak & Steel Transit Tripod With Top Screw Cap
Offered is an original W. & L.E. Gurley oak & steel adjustable tripod designed for the Gurley surveying transit. I do know that the tripod threads fit other antique transits such as the Buff and others. The tripod is well marked on the metal adjustment screw frames. Both the manufacturer (Gurley) and the patent date of July 2, 1878. Somehow- the thread cap has stayed with this tripod for over 100 years! Since yo...u never see these, it is like a large hockey puck sized cap made of oak with a brass inner section that screws on the tripod's transit attachment threads. The tripod is adjustable with the leg thumb screws to 36" closed to 58" extended. Very nice example of a 19c transit. See my other listings for matching transits.
