Reference Number: Avaluer:15506346 |
US Navy pilots of WW2 often wore beautifully made bullion wings on their dress jackets to denote their flight status. This US Navy WW2 VPB-118 PRIVATEER PATROL BOMBER PILOT NAMED + ID'D DRESS JACKET is in very good condition, with some light patina to the wings at the left chest, and with some light overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the jacket is in fine shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the tough navy blue (almost black) 1...00% wool gabardine construction. Most interestingly, it bears elegant gold bullion embroidered naval aviator wings sewn at the left chest, carries beautiful USN Lieutenant Junior Grade gold bullion stars and stripes rank insignia at the cuffs, and is named to "JO HANAN" on the original "M. BORN & CO." tailor tag inside the interior right chest pocket. Lt(jg) John O. Hanan served in Patrol Bomber Squadron 118 (VPB-118) during WW2, which flew the PB4Y-2 Privateer patrol bomber on combat operations in support of the Okinawa campaign in April 1945, followed by strikes against Japanese airfields, railroads, and shipping installations around East China, Korea, and Japan. Lieutenant Hanan served as the co-pilot of Crew 12 of VPB-118, nicknamed the "Old Crows". It features open top slit entry pockets at the left chest and each side of the lower front, a pleated chest and back, and a partial black satin lining, sports all 6 of the original USN "spread wing eagle" embossed gilt brass buttons down the double breasted front, and is a fine example of a very rare, original US Navy WW2 VPB-118 PRIVATEER PATROL BOMBER PILOT NAMED + ID'D DRESS JACKET. We have shown a photo of Lieutenant Hanan (second from the right in the top row) and the rest of Crew 12 in front of their PB4Y-2 Privateer. Now celebrating our 20th year on eBay.
