For sale is an antique 47 star flag of the United States of America in good condition. The flag is quite large, at 20 feet long and nearly 10 feet tall. The flag dates to the early 1870s. Please excuse the photos as it was windy when they were taken, the flag is square.Made of wool bunting that has been sewn together. The canton features clamp-dyed stars on the blue field in a fairly straightforward 8-7-7-7-8 pattern. You'll notice that the maker has made ...a notch to potentially add more stars later on, which is an interesting feature (look closely at the third star from the left on the top row, then follow it down.) The edges are gusseted and each metal ring on the hoist is riveted. It is a nicely made flag. There are some areas of damage but nothing structural. I've done my best to capture all the damage in the photos.Flag appears to be entirely hand sewn. Sewn into the heading is a maker's patch which reads "Wm S Worth" and there is also an area where 'M+S' is written in ink. Printed on the same area is "American Ensign 20-FT"This is an estate find and I have no other information on it. Please see the photos and I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
