The 2nd piece has a partial Olenoides vali pygidium.
Olenoides trilobites are very rare and highly sought-after. They are some of the oldest "spiny" trilobites in the fossil record, coming from the Cambrian period, approximately 510 million years ago. It is theorized that trilobites evolved spines as defense against predators, like a hedgehog. Spiny trilobites didn't become common until the Devonian Period, which was over 100 million years later. Complete Olenoides trilobites often sell for $2000-$5000. Here is an opportunity to own a unique and rare fossil at a fraction of the price.
Trilobites were a class of animal that lived in the seas hundreds of millions of years ago, and went extinct before the dinosaurs even existed! This is from the Pierson Cove section of the Wheeler Formation of Utah. Rock from this formation has a very attractive tan or reddish color. In this case, the surrounding matrix is a nice shade of tan.
Half a BILLION years ago, this area that would eventually become Utah was underwater, and some of the earliest forms of life flourished in this shallow sea. Sediment buried some of these creatures, and the ages turned them into stone.
I found this raw fossil myself in 2018, brought it back to my shop, and carefully chipped away small bits of rock, using precision tools under a microscope, in order to reveal the entire fossil. I've shaped the matrix so it stands upright by itself. It would make for an attractive desk or bookshelf display.
Unfortunately, a large percentage of fossils sold on eBay are fake and are usually made from nothing more than cast resin, which is why they're for sale at such a cheap price. This fossil, and all the fossils I sell, I find and prepare myself. I guarantee the authenticity of all of them, and I'm always upfront about any repair or restoration that may have taken place.
Please message me if you'd like to know more about my preparation process, or if you'd just like some help verifying the authenticity of fossils from others sellers.
