For your consideration is this early hand forged dog collar - great decorator item...This blacksmith made dog collar is early - based on the workmanship and style probably late 18th / early 19th century. It is in super condition and will make a great addition to anyone's collection of primitive antiques with multiple decorator possibilities. It measures ~ 22" overall length, and when fastened it has a diameter of ~ 9". The spikes measure ~ 3" in width (measured side t...o side), and they are ~ 2 3/4" in length. There are no missing spikes, but a few are slightly bent.It has been cleaned so it is show or display. There are no breaks, but there is one very small crack near on the hasp end which is shown in the accompanying photos.
These collars were made for hunting and guard dogs to protect the neck area. Bears, wolves, wild boar, big cats and other predators attack the neck of animals during fights. These collars were prominently used by shepherds to protect the neck of sheepdogs from wolf attacks. Today this is a great collectible item and will make a super addition to any trophy or hunting room display. It is another reflection of the blacksmith's art, and could be used in a variety of ways - in kitchens to hang pots, pans, or to hang herbs or flowers for drying. It is just a neat antique deserving of preservation in someone's collection, and it's in need of a new home.
