This is the last slab I have from this incredible log. I found what is now only my second log short log of this beautiful material in an estate auction late this winter. This gorgeous slab is one of the best that the log produced and is a particularly fine example of this rare, beautiful and unusual petrified wood fossil formation! It took me a few months to track down the source of this very distinctive and truly beautiful petrified wood specimen.... I knew that algae that distinctive would be recognizable if I looked long and hard enough and I finally found a reliable source that identified as coming from a site near Tonopah, Nevada. The wood itself is a very intricately preserved spruce. It's captured in gem grade agate that preserved even the tiny resin canals hidden within the fine growth rings. The larger, lace like frame framing the fossilized wood is fossilized algae that itself is very highly silicified and took a wonderful polish! The fog of my memory tells me I may have seen some of this wood once before, but it's a rare treat by any measure. You can bet one of these choice slabs will be going in my collection and I hope you'll take the opportunity to add one too. I've coaxed a mirror perfect finish from this choice slab, even in the algae frame! A world class collectible that I'm sure you're not going to see again for many years to come!! This particular round comes from Nevada and it's clearly a petrified conifer with fine resin canals. It appears to be consistent with modern spruce. The log must have been preserved deep under water as it shows no decay at all, but has a gorgeous and elaborate series of algae bands framing it. The growth ring structure is very visible across the entire, perfect cross section. There are a lot of rings in this small round so I suspect it was actually a limb. It's always exciting to have a chance to add another unique and interesting specimen to your petrified wood collection and this one deserves serious consideration. I only had a very short log section that I obtained years ago from a large estate sale and I doubt I'll run across it again. In 25 years of cutting, this is the first piece I've cut from this site! This is a full round cross section from a complete log or small limb. It took a beautiful polish, it really does look like a mirror! It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This fine round is a true collector piece. It measures 4 3/4" wide on the polished face and is cut about 0.41" thick. Weight is 0.56 lbs. Another Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary quality stone collectible!
