This is among the best preserved of all the Chinese logs we have had the chance to work with. It's an unusually dark specimen that is difficult to photograph accurately because it is so highly agatized. The light that penetrates the stone in the outdoors reveals richer color than you'll see with dimmer artificial light indoors, but it is beautiful and magnificently prepared to show off in any light! It shows cell detail through most of the specim...en and the growth rings are plainly visible to the naked eye! The color in this one is unique compared to any of the others we've prepared from this locale - definitely one of the darkest shades you'll encounter from this remote Asian petrified forest..We've examined this one under magnification and are able to provide a tentative identification that says "Hey look - yet another exceptional petrified wood specimen you can only get from Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary!!" Just wait until you see that mirror polish and the revealed fossil structure detail yourself! It's clearly a conifer lacking resin canals (the dark horizontal bands are the annual rings, while the honeycomb structure is what makes up the rays between the rings) which is typical of the early conifers as well as several modern ones including tamarack and some of the firs.I purchased some imported some seldom seen petrified wood Specimens from China many years ago that included several poorly finished but high potential slabs that had been hand finished in China. It takes an incredible amount of work to undo what was done to these stones by the poorly skilled (and probably even more poorly paid) workers that ground the lumpy, scratchy, dull finishes into these slabs. I pick the ones with the most potential to become true collector pieces and grind them flat again in my shop (that step alone can take more than a day). I then sand and polish them properly to produce magnificent collector specimens that are worthy of even the most advanced collections. I'm in the process of finishing another handful of these slabs and this fine specimen is one of them. This round is from a slow "squished" conifer that looks a lot like some of the specimens from Nevada (the Cherry Creek conifers almost always flattened out like this). The wood is mostly black to dark cherry/chestnut with a few hints of gold and other nice color accents that are visible in good light. There is plenty of high grade agate in this specimen to show off the fine wood grain details right down to the tiny conifer ray cells. The growth rings are fine and tightly packed together. Fine rounds are rarely seen from this part of the world and very few collectors have had the chance to add such rarities to their collections. This display slab is cut from the center of a nicely shaped log that allows you to see the rays in may areas of the round quite easily with a 10x loup. The wood is very well preserved and rivals the preservation and gem quality of the finest petrified wood specimens we get here in the US. This specimen has been carefully polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. It took a beautiful polish, testament both to the quality of the specimen and the exceptional lapidary work we apply to every piece we produce! It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! You probably can't even find Chinese wood elsewhere, but even if you could - it wouldn't have the Sticks-in-Stones finish. Our mirror perfect polish on one piece after another is why so many collectors start and stop their evening on eBay with us! This round measures 8" across the mirror finished face and is cut about 0.46" thick. It weighs 1.20 lbs. Display stand shown is sold separately.
