This is a very unusual antique oil burner lamp. The burner itself is marked clearly on the winder for Hinks & Son Birmingham. The lamp has a glass chimney fitted (this is unmarked). The stand itself has a copper oil tank and brass foot which extends into four feet at the bottom. The brass base is marked as "British Made" and on another foot has a clearly stamped maker's mark for William Arthur Smith Benson (three hammers and initials WASB in-between them). The most interesting feat...ure is the large slanted copper hood which is adjusted by a stiff wire which attaches to the edge of the burner (with a clamp holding onto the other side). It is especially made to be slanted at various degrees as the hole in the top of it is not straight and only fits over the chimney sideways. The hood is the main reason the lamp is identified as Arts & Crafts due to it being hand hammered copper with an aesthetically scalloped edge.There is a small dent in the hood near the wire which adjusts slant.
From the bottom of the feet to the top of the chimney the lamp is between 18 and 19 inches tall.
According to research done by a fellow eBay member this is a specimen of a rare WAS Benson reading lamp dating circa 1910, for a similar specimen please search British Museum exhibit number 1982, 0108.1. It is very difficult to date the lamp exactly. We cannot guarantee that the lamp still works other than the wick turner; the adjustment mechanism on the hood is also quite worn so it might not allow for all the various options comfortably (i.e. it slips).
Cost of postage is £8 due to size of item (also the chimney will need to be double boxed) but this can be waived for any willing to collect the item.
