I made an unexpected and wonderful discovery recently in the rockshop! I was cleaning up a storage area and came across a long forgotten, short section of log from some Argentina material I'd purchased decades ago during one of my first trips to Tucson. The log didn't look particularly promising so I'd neglected to cut it for years but was motivated to finish it recently and shocked with what the first cut revealed. This log was not only be...autifully colored, but it was absolutely unique in the shape and structure of the wood that it preserved. If you look closely you will see that the log has a fluted or lobed shape that is quite unique and suggests a story that goes beyond my identification skills. It appears to be conifer under magnification, but I'm not familiar with anything that grows with that distinctively articulated shape. It reminds me of the trunk end of giant sequoia and cedar trees that we have growing here in the northwest, but this is obviously much smaller and yet still manages those unique lobes. The color is also remarkable, as is the solid agate that preserved it all in magnificent detail. It took a fabulous polish that shows off every unique feature very clearly! A true collector piece in every sense of the word and an undeniably beautiful piece of natural artwork from ancient nature! This is simply one of the finest, best preserved petrified wood rounds we've come across in a long time. It's a perfect petrified wood round cross section from one of the newest locations to start producing world class petrified wood specimens. This very fine grade of petrified wood came from the southern tip of South America in Patagonia, Argentina! It is what remains of an ancient forest that thrived many millions of years ago. This round comes from one of the old logs we'd gotten from that part of the world over 20 years ago. I've suffered through same B grade logs with little agate or color from Argentina that many of you have over the years, but these completely agatized, highly detailed specimens are by far the best I've seen offered anywhere and with our mirror finish you know you're getting the best there is! This is a perfectly shaped conifer with a nicely centered heart and really stunning growth rings throughout the round. We have several logs from this region, but this one stands out as having produced the most unique, colorful and perfect fossil specimen for it's size that you'll likely ever see from this site. It's a wonderful piece that will enhance any collection or make a wonderful stand alone display piece for those who haven't gotten the bug bad enough (yet) to fill every room in the house with petrified wood! Most of the wood in this region is centered in darker browns with white, mustard, peach and black accents. It is much more striking and exhibits finer detail in real life than my camera can capture. This top quality round is not only 100% there, rind and all, but it has some of the most stunning growth ring detail you'll ever see in petrified wood. If the timeless mystery of this piece isn't enough for you, then I'm certain the simple, natural, gemmy beauty of it will be. The colors are warm and rich and the entire piece is completely preserved in a very high grade of agate. The high agate content allows this stone to be polished to a liquid perfect, lustrous finish that only the best grades of fossil wood can achieve. This round is on the smaller side for most of the Argentina specimens I've seen. A nice piece to broaden your own collection with. This round is is a thick slice taken from the center of a very solid log. It's really a nice piece, but what else would you expect from a business named "Sticks-in-Stones"?!
