An unusual HUGE PRINTED Berlin Woolwork chart depicting a beautiful arrangement of Water Lilies and Bull Rushes encasing a scene of Flamingoes. Although it is not dated, this chart was included in a small collection of 19th century Berlin painted charts that I purchased many years ago. It has discoloured with age and is not in good condition, but I thought that it is such an unusual design - I have never seen one like it - that it was worth addint to any collec...tion and saving. Produced in Paris in the 19th century, in the Berlin woolwork style, this printed chart was supplied in a magazine entitled 'Journal des Demoiselles'.

Details of this chart:Description - Printed design onto stiff paper.Condition - The design area is in good condition with no missing colours in the printed area although the chart itself is not in good condition - it is discoloured with age and has some foxing but otherwise intact. The chart has been folded into quarters in the past and these creases are evident - the lower one has developed into a tear but these do not detract or interfere with the design area. There is also a crease across the lower left corner. I have kept this in an A3 size polythene sleeve for many years and will post the chart inside to protect from creases or tears. Please study my photos to check condition of this chart before bidding.Size - Design grid area - (width x height) 11.5 x 14.25 ins. / 29 x 36.5 cmDate - unknown but most probably 19th century from Paris France
These printed charts were produced in the 19th century and published in the Ladies magazines of the day in London, Berlin and Paris as give-aways and as this type of needlework was popular, these charts helped to sell the magazines. Although these printed charts are of simpler designs, and not of the same quality as the hand-painted variety, they were widely used and saved in collections. They are interesting because they reflect the the popular taste of the readers of the magazines.
I have collected these Berlin woolwork designs for many years and have stitched some of them in wool onto canvas in the traditional way, but it is now time for me to dispose of my collection. I will be listing others for sale, so if you are interested, please add me to your Watch List.
