A very LARGE and magnificent hand-painted Berlin chart illustrating beautiful large Roses, Peony and Convolvulus cascading down from a wicker basket with outstandingly detailed and shaded foliage. The design is stunning in form, colour and condition and is rightfully among the top five designs of my whole collection, numbering over 200 Berlin charts that I had collected over a period of many years. Definitely a fine example to add to any serious collection.&nbs...p; The colours and shading are still bright in this rare needlework chart produced in the 19th century.

Description - Hand-painted chart onto grey parchment.
Condition - The condition of this chart can only be described as Excellent and would be described as Perfect if it were not for the very minor paint thinning and slight discolouration of the white paint in the centres of the blue Convolvulus flowers. I had to really scrutinise these areas to see the imperfections here - I had not noticed them before listing for sale. Otherwise all of the other colours of the paint are bright/vivid and in perfect condition. The large pale colour Rose is absolutely intact as this has been painted in cream and light caramel shades which have not deteriorated with time as is common with white and light shades. I have taken close-ups for inspection to illustrate this. The large central flowers are enormous compared to other Berlin charts - as can be seen from the photos these measure 10-11 ins./27-28 cm across. As it is difficult to describe the proportions of this design, I have included a photo of the chart being held up (the hands are large man size!) to give some visual idea of the size. There are no creases or tears within the grid area and the surrounding parchment is in good condition. There is a small tear on the right hand side edge measuring 2cm (reinforced on the back with masking tape), and 4 others along this edge all measuring less than 4mm. There are also 2 feint roundish marks on the edges. There is a thin feint black line across the lower left hand side corner but outside the grid area. Date - This designer produced these charts during the period 1828-1888.
These charts were produced in the nineteenth century, mainly in Berlin (but also in Vienna, Dresden, Nurenberg and Paris) by Companies who commissioned artists to paint an original design, which was outlined onto parchment with printed grids. Hand-drawn symbols were added to the squares to denote the shade changes, and the shaded colours painted by hand onto these squares for the needlewomen of the time to stitch onto canvas or linen. This was before the use of electricity and the painters had to use magnifiers, sometimes under candle-light to painstakingly paint the squares accurately. Many stitched examples can still be seen in grand houses throughout England and Europe, and of course in museums.
These surviving charts, in good condition, are now rare (most were tattered after use and destroyed) and are mostly to be found in specialised museums and private collections. Many are framed to make beautiful pictures.
I have collected these beautiful designs for many years and I have stitched some of them in wool onto canvas in the traditional way, but it is now time for me to dissolve and dispose of my collection. I will be listing others for sale, so if you are interested please add me to your Watch List.
