Because of the wide-body design this binocular earned its nickname: "FAT ONE". It does its name justice due to its weight and large size (although very balanced and comfortable when hand held). This binocular has a graticule or "strichplatte" (=vertical line for this model) clearly visible through the right eye lens was used to predict the firing path of the torpedos. Besides this the small horizontal line not only acts as the middle of view, but also as a distance scale to the trained eye of the German commander. Not all BLC 8x60 models were actually fitted with a strichplatte however this one does have one fitted before it left the Carl Zeiss factory in Jena, Germany. From 1942 onward full factory names were no longer engraved or pressed into the prism plates. Rather a 3-letter code was used to prevent exposure of the location to the Allied forces and the case of Carl Zeiss one of them was "BLC". The dark green textured factory finish has survived years of wartime service as well as the test of time of 75+ years up to ~95%.
The view through this binocular is outstanding and is considered crystal clear (absolutely no haze or foggy image), cleaned and serviced by Terry Vacany from Cine-collectors. When you close the eye relief flaps and observe through it you are fully immersed and focused on what you see. When you open the eye relief flaps and then observe through it becomes instantly clear that the picture is not losing any sharpness, contrast or clarity. The lenses are absolutely perfect and retained all their coatings. The prisms are perfect as well. No cracks or chips as can be seen on the carefully prepared photos. The view through left lens is 100% clear and spotless. The view through right lens is 99, 7% clear, but very few extremely small dust-like spots and one that is little bigger at the far right side (and thus mostly out) of the view. When observing through it is hard to notice anything at all, especially when looking at actual scenery. Furthermore this binocular has its authentic strap still attached. It has never been removed as all the stitches are fully intact without tears or loosened threads. The desiccant cartridges could be screwed off and filled with special absorbance materials to help acclimatize the inside of the binoculars while observing in humid conditions at sea. This is a far-focus screwdriver adjust binocular which means that focusing each dioptre may prove to be take some trial and error before you get it right. When you do this binocular is well collimated and gives a dream image.
This BLC 8x60 Kriegsmarine "Kommandanten Glas" withstood the harsh condition at open sea like battering waves, heavy salty winds and witnessed its fair share of unimaginable scenes of sea warfare in the last few years of WW2 and shows fantastic patina even to the details. This is truly a worthy binocular for your collection. If you are just starting to collect you are quite lucky to find one as clean as this that has actually been used during the war in active service. It is not restored in any way. All parts are original and authentic. If you already have a collection you will also find this collectible to be a worthy exhibit to invest into.
