Original Description:
A beautiful SET of 2 Chair designs (pair - back and seat) in a stunning floral design encompassing many different flowers and foliage worked in a total of 53 colours.   Including Roses, Pansies, Cherry Blossom, Harebells, Peonies, etc. arranged around a beautiful circular branch of Silver Birch.   Finding a set of Original 19th century hand-painted charts in useable condition has not been an easy task.   Over the many years that I have been a collector, I ...have only found three sets - 2 sets I purchased and regrettably, 1 I did not.   I have seen and purchased odd backs and seats many of which have been in appalling condition which is understandable.    It is very surprising that any survived at all - imagine - the Ladies stitching these had to work from these precious charts, probably taking months, or even years to complete a set, handling and folding over and over again.   Of course not many survived the constant use and many were destroyed.   This intact set, is therefore a very rare find.
I love this particular set for it's variety of flowers and colours (53 were used), which have stood the test of time, and the outstanding form, all held together with a magnificent branch of Silver Birch running through the design - see also the finished piece (stitched from this set of charts) on a Victorian chair in my photos.  Beautiful !
NOTE:  THIS SET of TWO ARE ORIGINAL 19th century HAND-PAINTED BERLIN WOOLWORK CHARTS (not copies or prints of hand-painted charts)
Details of Chair set of 2 charts:
Description - Hand-painted floral charts onto cream parchment.
Condition  - The charts are in fair+ condition, and although the vast majority of the design colours are still bright and vibrant, there are some thin paint areas. These are mostly the white painted flowers, the lighter pink colours and the pale colours in the Silver Birch branch.   Despite that, the printed symbols are still intact and the thin areas do not detract from the enchanting form of the design.   The surrounding parchment is slightly age discoloured and there are a number of tears mostly around the edges, (some of which do reach into the design area on the Back chart, and there are minor ones on the design area which, surprisingly do not cause loss of the paint - probably because of the linen backing) - see my close-up photos of the worst of these.   Both charts are quite strong as the edges of the parchment have been bound with carefully stitched ribbon all around the edges.  The Back chart has, in addition, been backed with linen for strength long ago. Unfortunately the designers name and numbers are hidden or lost.   Please study my photos to check condition of this chart before bidding.

These charts were produced in the nineteenth century, mainly in Berlin (but also in Vienna, Dresden, Nurenberg and Paris) by Companies who commissioned artists to paint an original design, which was outlined onto parchment with printed grids.   Hand-drawn symbols were added to the squares to denote the shade changes, and the shaded colours painted by hand onto these squares for the needlewomen of the time to stitch onto canvas or linen.   This was before the use of electricity and the painters had to use magnifiers, sometimes under candle-light to painstakingly paint the squares accurately.   Many stitched examples can still be seen in grand houses throughout England and Europe, and of course in museums.   These surviving charts, in good condition, are now rare (most were tattered after use and destroyed) and are mostly to be found in specialised museums and private collections.   Many are framed to make beautiful pictures.
I have collected these beautiful designs for many years and I have stitched some of them in wool onto canvas in the traditional way, but it is now time for me to dissolve and dispose of my collection.   I will be listing others for sale, so if you are interested please add me to your Watch List.
