Miniature mid/late 19th century sampler by L.Greenaway. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in a lustrous thread on cotton canvas, this tiny sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The field of the canvas is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with L.Greenaway's name and her place of residence - Chichester - contained within the lower section. The ...details are underlined with a small example of zigzag border then the whole piece is surrounded by the same pattern. The edges of the canvas have been cut and drawn approximately one inch deep on all four sides to create a sort of frame around the stitch work. The canvas has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some areas of faint staining and a light crease running across the middle. The colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows uniform brown marks around the edges of the canvas from where the sampler has been taped down at some point of time.Measures 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
