Dicot (Angiospermae)Virgin Valley Formation; MioceneBadger Flat, Washoe County, Nevada A really intereesting specimen here. It is a limb section but it was grossly impacted by Brown Rot Fungus. That is the genesis of those square chunks that can be seen on the polished face and on exterior of this specimen. Brown Rot fungus tends to travel easily through the medullary rays and the growth rings - hence the intersections are frequent and at nea...rly 90 degree angles making for a squarred off look. Indeed, part of the exterior and the center of this specimen was totally digested but the other side of the exterior has nice wood grain character. . It measures 3" x 2" on the polished face and is 7" long. We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we do not know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the common name of the tree, the Latin name of the genus or species, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
