For your consideration is this original Kyffhauserbund war veterans organization flag pole finial, or topper, model of 1921 thru 1945. This is the earlier finial, and least encountered version, with a 1914 Iron Cross made in the proper three piece construction, utilizing a true iron core, just like official award pieces. This example is unlike the more commonly found, solid cast versions of such flag pole toppers, where the iron cross is part of a one piece castin...g, like the rest of the finial.Please note that this example has been very nicely restored. When originally found, it was in horrible condition, having been located in a very wet and damp environment, where it had sat for many years. Because of it's rarity, it was decided that restoration was the best option, otherwise the iron core would have disintegrated out of the cross' frame completely. Restoration included a good soaking in white vinegar, whereby it was stripped entirely of any filth, except for the original period paint located on the front of the cross, and a few areas of it's reverse. Fortunately the front of the iron cross had no damage, while the reverse suffered some rusting, which has now been neutralized. The old fire gilding that had covered the remaining body of this finial could be seen within some of the recesses of the leaf detail, etc., but there wasn't enough of it left to make any difference. After a thorough cleaning, the finial was restored using both gold and silver foil. It was purposely restored to have a proper aged appearance. The original base portion was missing, so an appropriate antique lamp part was used.The finial measures 9 7/8" in height and 3 7/8" in width. This is a very nice item, which should display well for many years to come, and is a special plus for collectors of the German Iron Cross.
