Samuel Stroock left his home in Tenn in 1866 and trekked to New York to begin a small business in a loft, producing felt and carriage robes, or lap blankets, for the horse drawn carriage trade. He eschewed the poor standards and practices of the times when “caveat emptor” was the by-word, and insisted upon offering only the highest quality; a novel approach that quickly led to “Stroock Carriage Robes” being synonymous with the best.... This Carriage Lap Blanket is in perfect condition. No holes or tears and the label is still intact. Instead of one side having felt, flannel or wool there is horsehair in both sides making this blanket very thick, heavy, warm and from what I can gather...RARE. In all my research I have only been able to find the blankets with the backings on them, and they all seem to be in not so pristine condition. This blanket looks new. I can imagine it in the back of someone’s restored Model-T, or an antique horse drawn carriage, maybe in a museum somewhere being preserved. A part of our history. Of course I’m not an expert by any means I could be wrong, I obtained this Carriage Blanket at an estate sale in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Unfortunately I missed out on the other Stroock Carriage blankets at the sale. But this one was my favorite. The dimensions are 53”x70-1/2” All sales are final and as is.
