Auction description France or Italy, 1827: Stopping by the Lake and the MountainsThe vantage point of this lakeside and mountain view, done in pen, ink, and watercolor on paper, reminds me of places in northern Italy (the lakes region), and the peasant hat worn by the standing figure also indicates that the picture was made in that country, perhaps by one of the many French artists who travelled and worked there during the early nineteenth century. It's very skilled and ap...pealing early Romantic work; provenance is a recent Paris auction during which many family heirlooms of this period were dispersed.Dimensions are about 6.3" by 9, " currently house in an attractive archival mat that I propose to include with your purchase of the painting. The artist has dated M[arch] 1827, lower right. There are some foxing spots. not so very distracting in person, and the overall effect of this skilled little work is very good.
