This is for a rare embroidered metal thread purse/reticule with an iron framed fastening. Embroidered in metal thread on both sides with a floral design, possibly carnations, on a velvet background. The border is also embroidered with metal thread work, couched and with a further thin strip of silver plate running around the outer edge. This purse employs the three methods of metal thread embroidery. The interior lined in a mustard coloured silk material.This ...type of purse can be seen in museums across the world including the V&A and National Trust's Snowshill Manor, the collection formed by Charles Paget Wade. This type of purse dates from the 16th-17th century.
Height approx 5in (12.7cm), widest part 3.7/8in (9.8cm).
Condition - in remarkably good condition for age but showing signs wear and loose stitching and is of a fragile nature - see photos or ask questions.
