Original Description:
An 18th Century brown silk fichu or neckerchief with polychrome embroidered border.  The embroidery is worked in gold silver and coloured silk threads and the brown silk is very fine.  Some of the motifs have open areas filled with needle lace, worked in silver threads.  The colours are still bright and some of the embroidery is padded.  The top edge is rolled and is 56 1/2" (143.5cm) long, the fichu is 25 1/2" (65cm) deep at the centre back.  It is mainly, in ...very good condition, for it's age with wear at the points and some wear and small openings to the main body of the silk, see photographs. The fichu is a chestnut brown, the blue background is causing a colour cast.

There is a similar piece at the Colonial Williamsburg Museum, Cream-color Kerchief, 1700s in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum (Colonial Williamsburg) -- silk and metallic thread needlework on silk. It has similar filling stitches and is considered to be European: Accession No 1954-2.  Also another at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston.  It is referred to as an 18th Century neckerchief possibly Turkish: Accession No. 41.776.
