Original Description:
You are welcome to bid on this original U.S. M1 helmet that has been in the family since the end of World War II. My uncle was an infantryman and fought in Europe including combat duty in the Battle of the Bulge. This is one of a few items he took back to the states at the end of the war (I'm also listing a German and a French helmet he brought back). Please note that I am not a collector nor expert on military historical items, but I found some basic information on the internet regard...ing M1 helmets - The bails that attach the strap to the helmet are directly attached - no swivels. There is a seam in the front. The buckle is non-magnetic and appears to be tarnished brass. My guess is that this helmet could have been made in 1941 or 1942, but an expert out there may know for sure. There is a number stamped on the inside front but is very faint and difficult to read, The bullet or shrapnel impact near the temple is a bit unnerving, but I'm hoping this helmet may have saved a G.I.'s life. My uncle never shared any additional history, but I don't believe that this was his issued helmet. Note that the liner is damaged in the same place as the helmet. This helmet has been in storage for many years and I am hoping it goes to a collector who appreciates history and can share with others rather than being stored away in a box at my house. I have not attempted to clean or restore this artifact. I will ship at the discounted rate of $9.95 to US, 48 states - UPS Ground.  On Dec-09-19 at 16:42:05 PST, seller added the following information:Please Note: I am receiving a number of requests from bidders outside the US. I may be able to ship internationally as long as there are no conditions or restrictions regarding military artifacts such as this helmet. I may be able to ship USPS International and will invoice at the actual shipping cost that will depend on final sale value. As examples, I recently sent USPS.Com estimates to bidders in Europe and Southeast Asia ranging from $60 to $80 USD. Thank you.On Dec-10-19 at 22:22:55 PST, seller added the following information:
I received a question regarding the markings on the front of the helmet and wanted to share what I know ...  I am assuming that the "bars" painted could represent the rank of captain, but they are not stenciled on like some of the others I have seen on the internet - they are just crude hand painted markings and the liner also has two lines on the front in pencil - I don't know the exact history as to when the markings were added. There might be an expert out there who can comment and lend an opinion. Could they have been added in the field? What about the "+"? They were there as I remember when I first saw this helmet in the late 50's/ early 60's when I was a child. As referenced in the description, this helmet was brought back by my uncle at the end of the war. I wish I knew more about it.On Dec-11-19 at 08:30:56 PST, seller added the following information:
Some more details for those interested - I wish that I had more information to share on this helmet. I just know what I remember from what I was told many years ago by my uncle that this helmet was hit by enemy fire. My uncle passed away about 20 years ago, so I do not know his unit - I was aware that he served in the infantry, I believe as a corporal and he also supported field communications - radios, field phones, He later worked for Western Electric after the war  - I have a few pictures when he was serving. Perhaps the marking were added by someone else after the war - I don't know. As mentioned, I have not tried to clean or restore this helmet. This is one of three helmets he brought back I guess as mementos.  Later, when I was a young teen he showed me a Luger hand gun that he also acquired - I believe that was passed down to his son, I am not a collector, just looking to pass this helmet on.
