One of the more famous brush stroke smocks used by British forces throughout WWII and after. This is one has not been converted to a zipper front. Has the fitted hood with original... cloth ties. One of the cloth tie cinch openings on bottom has a small rip to stitching on left side - see picture. Both cinch ties are original and correct (hood+waist)
Main rectangle cloth label is missing, but stitching is still present - see pictureManufacturer label and date stamp with broad arrow are present and visible.
Camouflage is a variation on the broad stroke design used in the early DENISON Paratrooper Smock. Introduction of this pattern was in 1942. These were considered windproof, but had limited protection against rain/moisture.
These were used primarily in northern Europe by scouts, snipers, and some Scottish infantry units. Also a favorite of the SAS during WWII and conflicts after. After WWII these sets were issued to the French Forces fighting in Indo-China, and was the basis for the early camouflage clothing used in Vietnam in the 1960's.
Smock still has the original makers stitched tag. The makers tag is 'W MUTRIE Edinburgh. William Mutrie &Sons Ltd. was a long established theater costume and scenery manufacture located in Union street and Bells Brae in Edinburgh, Scotland. They had the contract to produce windproof clothing during WWII.
Color - Even fading throughout. Colors are still bright. Camera picks up purple more than it should.
