Description:This is another masterpiece from the Chokwe tribe of Congo from around the Mid-20th century. This called the Mwana Pwo or young woman masks and they are only danced by Chokwe men at festivals primarily for entertainment, are said to bestow increased fertility on the spectators. The masks represent female ancestors depicted as beautiful young women, with h...igh foreheads, balanced features, filed teeth, and scarification. This piece is no exception to the testament of the skilled Chokwe artisans.
The mask measures about 14 inches long, 10 inches wide, and about 6 inches high. So she is pretty impressive! She is adorned with the traditional scarifications with an interesting 2 moons on her forehead. So she is really special since most of the pieces you will find will have a geometric shape pattern to it or diamond patterns. She is sporting a full hairdo made of old fabric and elegantly adorned with bamboo. Some sort of red clay was added to the hair to give it its color. In addition to her hair is attached to a fabric material that is sewn and glued with some sort of resin to the wood base. The back of the mask you can clearly see signs of the mask being used by a performer which adds to the validity and authenticity of the mask.
The best part is... she still smells like Africa and in specific the Congo. I have lived in Africa for more than 20 years and have traveled to the Congo many times, she still brings back tons of good memories.
